Scientists in Vienna have described the first cow known to use a tool. Veronika, a pet cow on a small Austrian farm, picks up a deck brush by the handle with her tongue. She scratches her back with the bristles and her softer belly with the smooth handle. I bought the same brush.

My Review

Rating: Five stars. Six, if the cow is counting.

What I liked: Two ends, two jobs. The bristles are firm, for tough backs. The handle is smooth, for gentle spots. Veronika worked that out by herself. It took me the instructions and a phone call.

What I didn’t like: Picking it up with my tongue. I tried it once. I won’t be trying it again.

Who it’s for: Cows, scientists and anyone with an itch they can’t reach.

Final Thoughts

For a long time, people didn’t think cows used tools. Veronika proved them wrong, with a brush. When I can’t reach an itch, I ask someone. She just picks up a brush.

The scientists say she isn’t necessarily smarter than every other cow. But she’s the first one they’ve studied doing it, and being first is very important. Trust me.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of brush is it?

A deck brush, the long kind for scrubbing floors. In Veronika's case, for scrubbing Veronika.

Did you meet Veronika?

No. She was busy scratching. I respect a cow with priorities.
