This week I got a polite letter from my local library. It said a book I borrowed was overdue, and could I please return it. I’m a big supporter of libraries. I’ve been in several. So I wrote back right away, by hand, on my best paper. Here are both letters.

Their Letter

Dear borrower, our records show that A Short History of Bridges was due back on March 1. Please return it at your earliest convenience. Kind regards, the library.

My Reply

Dear library, thank you for your letter. It was beautiful. Very clear writing. You should write books.

About the bridge book. I haven’t finished it yet. It is not short, by the way. It’s very long. I’m on page four.

Also, it now has a little coffee on page two, which I believe makes it more valuable. You’re welcome.

I’ll bring it back when I’m done. I’m a very fast reader, once I start, and I’m planning to start soon.

Yours, a loyal borrower.

The library wrote back, even more politely. They said I could renew the book online for two more weeks. I renewed it at once. I’ll be finished by then, or by the summer. One of those.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did you return the book?

Yes, eventually. I left it on the counter with a note that said "Read by me." It's a special edition now.

Was there a fine?

No fine. The librarian charged me one smile. I paid in full.
