Last Tuesday, I parked outside the bakery and went in for a croissant. When I came out, there was a ticket on my windshield, for taking up three parking spaces. I’ve written to the city to appeal, and I’m feeling very confident.

My Appeal

Dear Parking Department,

I’m writing about ticket number 4471, which I was given for parking across three spaces. I’d like to explain.

First, my car is very important, and it needs room to breathe.

Second, I was in the bakery for only 40 minutes. The croissants weren’t ready, so I waited, which shows patience.

Third, by using three spaces, I saved two other drivers from having to park next to the bakery’s bins. That’s a public service.

Fourth, the white lines on the road are very thin and hard to see. I’ve attached a photo of them, taken from inside the bakery.

Finally, I was only using one space at a time, so I’ll happily pay one-third of the fine.

Yours, patiently, Little Donny

The City’s Decision

The city replied in two days. My appeal was turned down, and they’ve sent me a booklet called Parking: A Guide.

I’ve read it from cover to cover. It’s very good. It explains the white lines, the spaces and the meters, with clear diagrams. But it doesn’t mention croissants once, which I think is a big gap. I’ve written to suggest a chapter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did you pay the ticket?

Yes, eventually. I requested a receipt with a thank-you note on it. They sent a normal one.

Where do you park now?

In one space, right in the middle, very carefully. It took eleven tries.
