Welcome to Iceland, Mosquitoes
Iceland had never found a mosquito in the wild. This month, three turned up. I wrote them a welcome guide.
Iceland had never found a mosquito in the wild. Then, this month, a moth watcher north of Reykjavík found three on a wine-soaked rope he’d hung out for moths. A first. Somebody had to welcome them.
Welcome to Iceland!
You’ve arrived in one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls. You’re the first of your kind out here, so you’re making history. Act like it.
The Rules
- Do not bite Donny. I’m a guest here, and so are you.
- Winters are long. Experts say you’re a cold-hardy kind that hides in barns and cellars. Smart. Find a nice one.
- The wine rope was for the moths. Ask before you drink.
- Being mosquito-free used to be Iceland’s famous thing. Now you’re the famous thing. Be worthy of it.
Final Word
Antarctica is now one of the last places on Earth without you. Don’t get any ideas. I’ve been there. It’s far too cold, and the penguins have enough to deal with.
