Last Sunday was Burns Night, when Scotland eats haggis, reads poetry and brings out the bagpipes. That night, I decided to learn them. They’re very loud, which I like in an instrument. Here’s my log, with the neighbors’ notes.

Practice Log

Day 1: Unpacked the bagpipes. They look like an octopus in a kilt. Blew into them. They made a sound like a goose with an opinion.

Note from the neighbors: “Is everything all right?”

Day 3: Played for an hour. Every dog on the street joined in. That’s a band.

Note from the neighbors: “Please practice in the garage.”

Day 7: Played in the garage. The garage door opened by itself. I think it wanted to hear better.

Note from the neighbors: “We’re going on holiday. For a while.”

Progress Report

One week in, I can play one note, very loudly, for a very long time. That’s one more note than the neighbors can play. My first concert is booked: in the garage, next Saturday, for anyone still living on the street.
