Rome now charges two euros to walk down to the Trevi Fountain. Two euros. I’ve tipped more than that to the man who parks my golf cart. Still, rules are rules, unless they’re mine, so here are my tips for visiting.

Donny’s Fountain Tips

Pay at the gate. They take cards only. I don’t carry cards. My face is my card. They didn’t accept it, but you could tell they wanted to.

Throw a coin. Tradition says that if you toss a coin over your shoulder, you’ll come back to Rome. I threw a gold one. Now Rome has to come back to me.

Stand in the middle. The fountain is old and famous, but nobody can see it when I’m standing in front of it. That isn’t my fault. That’s composition.

Make a wish. I wished for a bigger fountain. They’re thinking about it.

My Business Advice

Two euros is far too cheap. Charge fifty and add a velvet rope. People love a velvet rope. They’ll pay anything to be on the right side of one. I’ve built an entire life around that.
