I’m taking a week off by the sea. Before you go on vacation, you set an automatic email reply, so people know you’re away. Mine is a little more detailed than most. Here it is, for anyone who emails me this week.

The Reply

Thank you for your email. I am currently out of the office, enjoying a very well-deserved break.

I’ll be back on Monday, rested, relaxed and more impressive than ever.

If your message is urgent, please email me anyway. I’ll be checking every 15 minutes.

If it’s about a deal, I’m in.

If it’s a compliment, please send it again on Monday, so I can enjoy it twice.

While you wait, here’s my schedule. 9:00: Breakfast on the balcony. 11:00: Floating in the pool. 3:00: Reading my emails, including this one.

Best wishes, Little Donny (on vacation)

The Results

I got 31 emails that week. I replied to every one of them personally, as well as the automatic reply, so everyone got two answers from me.

People told me I was the most available person on vacation they had ever met. One of them asked if I had actually left the house.

I’m counting all of that as compliments, which means I’ll need to hear them again on Monday.

Frequently Asked Questions

Every 15 minutes? Really?

No. Every ten. I like to under-promise.

Did you manage to relax?

Very much. On Thursday I relaxed so hard that I didn't check my email for twenty minutes.
