I Went to the Met Gala as a Work of Art
The Met Gala's dress code was Fashion Is Art. I came as a masterpiece, frame included, and wrote my artist's statement.
The Met Gala in New York had a dress code this year: Fashion Is Art. The Met’s new exhibition puts clothes beside paintings and sculptures, nearly 400 objects from about 5,000 years. So I came as a work of art. Here is my artist’s statement.
Artist’s Statement
Untitled (Donny), 2026. Mixed media: suit, tie, enormous frame.
In this work, the artist explores the relationship between a man and his frame. The frame is very large. The man is also, in a way, very large, as a presence.
The tie points down, toward the earth. It asks the question: what is down there? The artist doesn’t know. He has been very busy.
Please notice the brushwork. There is no brushwork. The artist was painted by nature, and nature did a great job.
The Reviews
A guard asked me to stand perfectly still, like the statues. I stood still for nine whole minutes, a personal record.
One lady asked which period I was from. I said, “The best one.” She wrote it down. I think I’m going to be in a catalog.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the frame comfortable?
No. Art isn't supposed to be comfortable. It's supposed to be looked at.
When can people see the exhibition?
From May 10 until January 2027, at the Met on Fifth Avenue. The clothes are next to the art. I was next to the snacks.
