Where Each of My Five Peas Went
At the World Pea Shooting Championships, you get five peas and a target covered in putty. I got five peas. The target was mostly safe.
At the 53rd World Pea Shooting Championships in Witcham, shooters blow peas through tubes up to 12 inches long at a target covered in putty. In the Traditional class, the champion won for a third straight year. I shot five peas.
My Five Peas
- Pea one. Straight into the putty! The outer ring. One point. What a start.
- Pea two. Over the target, over the fence and into a hedge. A blackbird came to look at it.
- Pea three. I breathed in instead of out. I’d rather not talk about pea three.
- Pea four. It rolled out of the end of the tube and onto my shoe. Technically, it traveled.
- Pea five. I ate it. Peas are good for you, and there’s no rule against it, yet.
My Score
One point, from pea one, which I’ve had framed, along with the putty around it.
In the Open class, shooters may use laser sights to aim. Next year I’ll try the Open. I’ll point the laser right at the middle of the target, and then I’ll walk over and press the pea into the red dot by hand.
I’ve been told that isn’t shooting. I’ve been told that’s called walking. Show me the rules on walking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you bring your own peas?
No. The organizers hand them out, so everyone is equal. I requested larger peas anyway.
What's the middle of the target worth?
Five points. The next ring is three, and the outer ring is one. I specialize in the outer ring.
