This week, New Zealand named the black robin its Bird of the Year, its first win. By 1980, there were only five black robins left in the world. Now there are a few hundred. I narrated a documentary, in my best whisper.

The Documentary

Scene one. A small black bird sits on a branch. It’s shy. It has no idea it’s about to be famous. I know that feeling, except for the shy part.

Scene two. The robin sings. A beautiful song. Short and simple, no band. I’d add a band.

Scene three. The robin learns it has won. It doesn’t react. Very humble. I’ve tried humble. It isn’t for me, but it suits the robin.

Closing Narration

From five birds to a few hundred. From one branch to the top of the vote. I’d call it the comeback of the century, and I don’t say that about many birds. Thank you, little robin. You’ve earned it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the black robin special?

It came back from five birds to a few hundred. That's one of the great comebacks, and I know comebacks.

Did you vote?

I was busy narrating. But I endorsed the robin, which is even better.
