How I Became a Superhero, Issue One

Superheroes usually get their powers in some dramatic way. One gets bitten by something strange. Another falls to Earth from a faraway planet. Mine came on a Tuesday afternoon, on the couch, during a very long nap.

The Origin

Panel 1. Donny lies on the couch. The afternoon sun is shining in.

Panel 2. Donny wakes up. Something is different.

Panel 3. He’s still on the couch. But now he is a superhero.

His powers:

• Super Confidence. He can walk into any room as if he owns it.
• Super Hearing. He can hear his own name from three rooms away. He can’t hear the word “bedtime” at all.
• The Cape. It doesn’t do anything. It’s for the look.
• Flight. Still under review.

The First Mission

Panel 1. A cat is stuck in a tree. The neighbors are worried.

Panel 2. Captain Donny rushes to the scene, cape flying.

Panel 3. He looks up at the cat and tells it, firmly, to come down.

Panel 4. The cat comes down, because it was about to anyway.

Panel 5. Captain Donny takes a bow. A squirrel watches from the fence. It might be applauding.
